Keys to Tetouan - edition by Mois Benarroch, orna taub. Literature & Fiction eBooks @ . Reviews

Mois Benarroch is one of the very few contemporary Sephardi writers and poets which unfolds the mythological roots and branches of the ancient Sephardi Jews from the very early generations of their formation up to recent times of their voyages and journeys across many countries and continents. The magnificient city of Tetuan in northern Morocco stands at a centric junction which connects all the entangled threads of the Sephardic narratives. It exceeds its geographic and physical presence and becomes spiritual source of meaning and resort. Mois Benarroch distinctively enchanting and highly talented story telling captivates the reader heart and spirit to an exceptional and unique reading experience.
The book "Keys to Tetouan" by Mois Benarroch is a really great book to read, especially if your interested in learning about the culture of the Jews, and what They went through during the exile. It is a book in which you will learn about the Judaísm religion. It gives great details on what the authors went through in those countries. Overall, i recommend reading the book because it has history in which we can learn from.
A fascinating, challenging, multi-layered, insightful novel. This is an experimental work that brims over with exasperating family humour, scorching questions about heritage, identity, and the ties that bind us to certain corners of the earth even when there is a history of misery there. There's so much humanity in this book, although if you like a linear plot it will be a challenge.
Mois Benarroch is a poet who has taken the plunge into novel writing. He chose a non traditional structure to tell the story of a traditional family who spread beyond their roots in Tetouan to a much wider world.
Mois Benarroch in Keys to Tetouan introduces the reader to Sephardic identity, Morocco, and life as a journey. His writing is an emotion filled tale with captivating dialogue. You will find that this is a good book to read if you are interested in the Jewish experiences of life.
This is a fascinating story written from the perspective of Fernando Benzimra, who in 1996 discovers that his father was Jewish. He painstakingly traces his 500 years Sephardic lineage from Spain to Tetouan in Morocco, to Venezuela, Brazil and Israel. He pieces this together through letters from distant relatives and anecdotes from people who knew the Benzimra family. Tetouan is the main focus and Mois Benarroch's recapture of life in this North African city, where Jews and Arabs lived side by side for generations, is evocative and beautifully written. The style of this book is unconventional and is written more as stream of consciousness, and, unfortunately has frequent grammar mistakes which is distracting. It's a pity about the editing, otherwise this would be a brilliant book.
This novel delves into the culture and worldview of Sephardic Jews, the descendants of those who were expelled from Spain in the fifteenth century. In succeeding chapters, the reader follows the stories of members of one family as they make their homes in far-flung places—yet feel the pull to Tetouan, the city that became their haven.

The novel is written in an unusual style, which may be hard for some readers to follow. The author presumes familiarity with words and terms those unfamiliar with Jewish traditions and teachings may not recognize. (There is no glossary.)

A fascinating look at a little-known group of people with a rich culture.
After I read the description of the book before accepting the review opportunity, I already anticipated the book would not be very entertaining for me. The reason is that the history of such groups of people are strange for me. But I like the professionalism done by the editor in editing the novel. I rate the story 2 out of 4 stars.
